MD4352 Making Tracks: Found Sound Composition
Updated: Jan 15, 2021
For the first set task set in MD4352, I was instructed to create a 2-5 minute track using found sound as the focus of the song.
The song uses the Sampler to convert found sound into eccentric textures that don't have any highly specified music elements as a tuned instrument would have. This found sound was sourced from the University's campus, featuring some of the more voguish wildlife (the ducks) as well as footsteps and the rattling of a tree branch in the pond itself - struck from a distance by an umbrella. It was much easier to transform found sound into percussive elements but more difficult to create instrumentation with the Sampler, so I instead used the samples more as a texture: this is very prominent with the 'duck choir', which is a slightly out of time texture that goes across the whole composition.
